Oswald is a charming, persuasive con artist with an intense hatred for Batman. He believes he is not just Batman's equal in the art of crime, but his superior, and is willing to do anything to prove it. He also has a deep hatred for Joe Chill, a man who killed his parents, and believes that all of his criminal achievements were in part at least in part inspired by his hatred for him.
Penguin is a very complex character, with many different facets to his personality. In many ways he is a nihilist, believing that life is meaningless and that all things are predestined from the beginning.
