Alexandre Koyré is a French philosopher and science historian of Russian origin, born Aleksandr Vladimirovitch Koïranskiï, in Russian: Александр Владимирович Койранский on August 29, 1892 in Taganrog [1] (Russian Empire), in a family of wealthy merchants of Jewish origin, and died on April 28, 1964 [1] in Paris (France).
His work in epistemology and the history of science focuses on Galileo and cosmology in the 16th and 17th centuries. He sees the birth of modern physics in the 17th century as a "scientific revolution". This expression is characteristic of his discontinuous conception of the history of science, which he shares with Gaston Bachelard. Moving from the "closed world" of Aristotelian cosmology to Isaac Newton's theory of an "infinite universe" thus presupposes a radical transformation of the metaphysical bases on which physics rests.
