    Hugo de Groot (also Huig de Groot) dit Grotius (Delft, 1583 - Rostock, 1645) is a humanist, diplomat, lawyer, theologian and jurist born in the United Provinces (now the Netherlands). Young intellectual prodigy, he studied at the University of Leiden. He was imprisoned for his involvement in the intra-Calvinist conflicts in the Dutch Republic, but escaped hiding in a book chest. Grotius wrote most of his major works in exile in France.
