Jean Buridan, in Latin Joannes Buridanus (1292-1363), French philosopher, scholastic doctor, was the instigator of religious skepticism in Europe. He was, in the West, the rediscoverer of the theory of impetus, around 1340 [1]. Its name is more frequently known for the thought experiment known as the paradox of the donkey of Buridan. A legend, propagated until the 21st century by the Ballade des dames du temps jadis de François Villon, mistakenly associates it with the Nesle tower affair.
