    Turgut Balya was a man of many talents, but he excelled in the arts. He wrote three books of poetry, six volumes of prose, and four plays. He also composed many songs, including "Five Letters to the Motherland" (1920). He was the main lyricist of the famous Turkish song "Yabanci" (The Gypsy, 1921), composed by Halit Ergenç.

    He was also a historian. He published the first Turkish encyclopedia "Milli Tarih", which was translated into English as "National History". The first volume of this encyclopedia was published in 1937 by the Kültür Bakanlığı (Ministry of Culture) in Istanbul. The other volumes were published later by the Ankara University Press. He also published a number of books on military history, including "The Battlefields of Anatolia".

    Turgut Balya was one of the first Turkish authors to have an individualized signature, which could be used for both his books and his letters.
