In my view, the most important thing to understand about the personality types is that they are not absolute categories of people. The world is a messy place, full of people who do not neatly fit into our neat little boxes.
I have been in the business of providing type testing and counseling for over thirty years now, and I still get calls from clients who want me to explain why they are INTP or ENTP. They want a quick and easy answer. They want a logical explanation, so that they can take the information from my office and use it to figure out if they should change careers, make a new friend, learn a new language, or move to a different part of the country.
I do not provide such answers. Personality typing is not a science. It is a tool. It works well for most people, but it has limitations. If you are not one of those people, you will be frustrated with it. I have found that many of my clients are better off using their intuition and their gut feelings to make decisions. If they see themselves as ENTP or ISTP, then they are probably right.
