“The first novel of Kajiri Reiko, the first one I read, was called ‘The Girl from the Snow,’ and it was about a girl who comes from a time of a dreadful war and a time of a terrible famine, and she is a Lost Girl, and she is going to find her own kind. And I thought there were a lot of parallels between how she was going on a journey to find her own kind and my own journey to find my own kind.
As I was writing this book, I was writing it as a way of dealing with my own loss. I had lost my father that year, and I was also finishing up my dissertation at that time. And I thought that my own story could be a parable of the general theme of the book: finding our own kind and finding out what we were made to do with our lives.
So I was very aware of the parallels between me and the main character.
