She worked as an economist at the Bank of England and the United Nations, and later worked at a brokerage firm in New York City, where she was hired by Merrill Lynch. Her friend and fellow Merrill Lynch employee, Henry Kissinger, recommended that she work at the U.S. State Department, and she spent several years working there before joining Kissinger at Lehman Brothers.
