Shelby is the oldest of the Shelby family. He is an old-fashioned Southern gentleman, living in a farmhouse in North Carolina with his wife Mary, who was originally from Massachusetts. He is also the father of Martin and Shelby, who are both unmarried. He has a close bond with his daughter Sissy, who was born after he and Mary married. He is shown to be very protective of Martin, but does not let this get in the way of their friendship. He also tries to keep an eye on his grandchildren, especially Shelby, Jr., though Martin usually gets in the way.
Shelby can be very stubborn when it comes to things that he does not want to change, such as his preference for old-fashioned manners and decorum.
