On 14 January 2016, Halla-aho announced on Facebook that he would be running as a candidate for the presidency.
Halla-aho wrote a book called "Suomen työväenpuolueen historia" ("The History of the Workers' Party of Finland"), which was published in 2011 by Otava. The book was described as a "search for the real Finland" in the context of Finland's politics. Previously, between 2014 and 2019, he was a member of the European Parliament, where he was part of the Indentity and Democracy group.
