He's a totally loyal friend, but he doesn't see his own friends' needs or opinions as important. He's a bit of a jerk, but in the end, he'll always help you out if you need him. And yes, it's true that there aren't many of these types in real life. But that's because they're portrayed as uninteresting and annoying.
The TV adaptation of Sherlock Holmes was a great example of this in action. The literary character is known for his dry wit and attitude, but the TV adaptation tried to make him into a more likable and sympathetic character. The whole thing was a disaster: Sherlock was now much nicer, but the writers had muddied up his personality. And the show itself was too silly to carry the characterization successfully. (Which is ironic, because several of the writers had written well-received adaptations of other famous works of literature.)
