Beria is famous as the first head of the NKVD (the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs), which was the precursor to the KGB. Stalin eventually tried to purge Beria, and he was arrested and executed in 1953 after a show trial.

Beria actually had a very close relationship with Soviet intelligence because he wanted to be certain his country would remain strong during the Cold War. He also wanted to keep his own power base from being challenged by others.
Lavrentiy Pavlovich Beria (29 March [O.S. 17 March] 1899 – 23 December 1953) was a Soviet politician, Marshal of the Soviet Union and state security administrator, chief of the Soviet security and secret police apparatus (NKVD) under Joseph Stalin during World War II, and promoted to deputy premier under Stalin from 1941. He later officially joined the Politburo in 1946. Beria was the longest-lived and most influential of Stalin's secret police chiefs, wielding his most substantial influence during and after World War II. Following the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939 he was responsible for organizing the Katyn massacre. Beria administered the vast expansion of the Gulag labor camps.
