Martin McGuinness was an Irish republican Sinn Féin politician and a former leader within the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). McGuinness was the deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland from May 2007 to January 2017 alongside several leading figures in unionism; Ian Paisley, Peter Robinson, and Arlene Foster. He was instrumental in the negotiation and implementation of the Good Friday Agreement during his term in the Assembly, and is widely recognized for his commitment to the Northern Irish peace process after the IRA ceasefire.
