She was elected as President of the Philippines on February 25, 1986, and was sworn in the following day. She won a landslide victory against her nearest rival, Ferdinand Marcos, who had been President since 1965. The triumph of the peaceful People Power Revolution and the ascension of Corazon Aquino into power signaled the end of authoritarian rule in the Philippines and the dawning of a new era for Filipinos.
