Ayub Khan was born in a poor family in a small village called Gujar Khan, in the northern part of Punjab. His childhood memories revolve around his childhood home. He received his early education from his village school. In the 1930s, he joined the British army as an officer cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. In 1935, he joined the British Indian Army as a lieutenant colonel in the Second World War, serving as a military advisor to the government of India. In 1948, he was promoted to the rank of major general and was given the responsibility of training the new army of Pakistan.
On 5 March 1951, Ayub Khan resumed his post as Pakistan's military governor after a ten-year hiatus. He had been a popular figure in Pakistan during World War II, and his appointment by Ayub Khan was supported by the United States. From 1951 to 1958, he served as the Commander-in-Chief of Pakistan's armed forces. As Defense Minister, he introduced progressive reforms in the military. He was responsible for the integration of the army into the national security policy.
