The son of a chief, Hun Sen was born in Kampot Province. He was the first Cambodian to attend university, earning a degree in law from France’s University of Paris (Sorbonne) in 1962. He went on to join the Khmer Rouge, fighting against the American-backed Lon Nol regime. When the Khmer Rouge was toppled, Hun Sen became a senior official in the party’s central committee.
As a member of the party’s upper echelon, Hun Sen had access to privileges and resources that others lacked, and he used these advantages to build his power base in the party and in Cambodian politics.
Hun Sen won the general elections in 1993, becoming prime minister. He was reelected in 1998 and was named president in 2004.
Hun Sen has held power for 19 years and has been Cambodia’s longest serving prime minister, which is over twice as long as the second-longest serving prime minister.

He is the longest-serving head of government of Cambodia, and one of the longest-serving leaders in the world. He is also the president of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and a member of the National Assembly for Kandal. His full honorary title is Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen (Khmer: សម្តេចអគ្គមហាសេនាបតី តេជោ ហ៊ុន សែន; meaning "Lord Prime Minister, Supreme Military Commander Hun Sen").
