Yau was the first woman to be appointed chief executive of Hong Kong in 1997, but was forced to resign after just 48 days in office due to a massive protest against her government's plan to allow extradition to China. She has since worked as an adviser to several Hong Kong government departments and heads the Hong Kong Political Reform Alliance (HKPRA).
