    He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, to a middle-class family. His father was a lawyer and his mother a housewife. He was only 3 years old when the Mexican Revolution broke out, and he remembers his family escaping from their house. His father brought them to his brother's home in the United States, however the family later moved back to Mexico.

    As a child, Guillermo del Toro was deeply affected by the death of his father at a young age, and believed he would suffer the same fate at any moment. He would disappear for days to watch funerals and even take part in a ritual burial. He attended a Catholic school until he was 12, when he was sent to a boarding school run by Jesuits. He later decided to become a filmmaker.

    In 1966, he enrolled in the University of Guadalajara but dropped out after only 4 months. In 1968, he moved to Mexico City and became a freelance illustrator for several magazines. In this period, he also took classes at the Centro de Estudios Cinematográficos (CECEM).

    Guillermo del Toro Gómez (Spanish: [ɡiˈʝeɾmo ðel ˈtoɾo]; born October 9, 1964) is a Mexican film director, screenwriter, producer, and novelist. In his filmmaking career, del Toro has shifted between Spanish-language dark fantasy pieces, such as the gothic horror films The Devil's Backbone (2001) and Pan's Labyrinth (2006), and more mainstream American action films, such as the vampire superhero action film Blade II (2002), the supernatural superhero film Hellboy (2004), its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), and the science fiction monster film Pacific Rim (2013).His 2017 fantasy film The Shape of Water received critical acclaim and won a Golden Lion at the 74th Venice International Film Festival as well as the Academy Award for Best Picture.
