Dale Squires was born in Indiana on November 30, 1927 and grew up in a farmhouse. His mother was a first grade teacher and his father a fruit and vegetable farmer.
Dale attended Purdue University and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. While at Purdue, Squires played football and basketball and was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity.
After college he joined the US Navy as an electronics technician. He served in the Pacific theater during World War 2, earning a Bronze Star for his war service. He also earned the Purple Heart for wounds received from Japanese fire. After the war, Dale earned a Master's degree from Purdue University and a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska.
After earning a Ph.D., Dale was employed as a Research Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Nebraska until 1953, when he moved to Miami, Florida to become a Research Associate Professor of Eletronics Engineering at the University of Miami, where he worked until 1965. In 1965 he became a Research Assistant Professor of Eletronics Engineering at the University of Illinois, where he worked until 1969.
