The Jungians see the introverted intuitive (Ni) as more than just intuition, but as a more general awareness of connections between things. I think this view fits well with the more modern definition of intuition as "the ability to intuit connections between things."
So the Jungian Ni involves more than just making connections between things, but also discovering the nature of those connections.
Jung called this extra awareness of connections "synchronicity" (I think it's his word for it). He thought the intuitive was more likely to experience synchronicity than the sensing or feeling types. I think that's why he called it "extra awareness" rather than "intuitive" (he was also concerned that the word "intuition" was too closely tied to "instinct" and "primitive").
I think this extra awareness is what makes the introverted intuitive (Ni) especially good at noticing patterns and connections.
