He was born in Los Angeles, California, and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. The youngest of three children, he is the son of Charles DuVall, a former police officer, and his wife, Linda DuVall. His brother Christopher DuVall stars in "Hawaii Five-0" and his sister, Julia DuVall, is a writer and producer.
DuVall attended Las Vegas High School, where he played varsity football and was named to the all-state team. He later enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he studied communications and played linebacker on the football team. During his time at UNR, he worked as a waiter and a bellman at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.
DuVall moved to Los Angeles in his early twenties, where he worked as a flooring installer and was involved in the live theater scene. He worked as a production assistant on the television series "The Pretender" (1996), and an associate producer for "Parenthood" (1990–91).
