A few years ago, in the course of a very different quest, I was given a boxful of old papers relating to a woman called ‘Ethel’. I had no idea what they were or why they were there, or who Ethel was. The papers were in a box marked ‘Family History’.
The box was full of letters, diaries, newspaper cuttings, photos, and other items. I was intrigued, and set out to begin to piece together the story of a woman who had a great impact on a small town in Gloucestershire.
The result is a novel. It’s a fictionalised version of the real woman’s story, about how she came to be a resident of Swindon, and her part in the building of the military hospital that was to become the Princess Royal.
