His role in the show is that of a genius and a nerd and is often the butt of jokes and the subject of teasing by his friends.
In the series he is portrayed as being a rather poor student, having been expelled from his high school in "The One Where They're Going to Make Me Do Something Stupid" and failing his first year at Princeton in "The One Where Rachel's In Love". However, in "The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate", he finally graduates from high school and earns a full ride to Princeton. He returns in "The One Where Ross Can't Flirt" to thank his friends for helping him graduate, but not before getting a job at a dermatology clinic.
In "The One Where Joey Moves Out", he moves to New York City, where he meets his biological father, who is played by David Schwimmer.
