Both conditions, in combination with his clubfoot and scoliosis, caused him to require crutches and braces for the rest of his life.
He had several siblings but only one sister, who was one year older than him. He was raised by his mother and father, who were both devoutly religious, their faith being based on the teachings of the Church of Loredan. They were raised on a settlement of the Loredan church on Quirm, where the settlers were all devout followers of the church.
