How the MBTI Came to Be
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) system of personality types originated from a 1923 book, The Language of the Hand by Isabel Myers and her mother Katharine Cook Briggs. The first edition of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was published in 1958. It was a tool for selecting individuals for cooperative group work, as well as a way of understanding individual differences.
In 1962 Isabel Myers’ daughter Carol Myers published her own book, Gifts Differing: Understanding Personality Type, the first full description of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. In 1976 Robert Kegan and Paul McHugh published their book The Spectrum of Human Personality, which contained the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Kegan and McHugh were psychologists at Harvard University.
The MBTI is based on four dichotomies which describe four pairs of opposing characteristics.
