H. Louis Nichols was born on January 20, 1904, in New York City. He had a brother and sister, Harry and Nellie. His father died when he was 6 years old, and his mother was a seamstress. When he was 10, he and his brother moved to Brockton, Massachusetts, to live with their uncle, Charles R. Nichols. They lived there until he was 16 years old.
In Brockton, he attended the local public schools, and his uncle taught him how to read and write in Italian. He also had a part-time job as a mail carrier. In 1920, Nichols moved to Pascoag, Rhode Island. His job as a mail carrier allowed him to move around the state and meet many people. He also placed advertisements in newspapers and received responses from many people interested in his services as a mail carrier. His goal was to learn the language of the people he met so he could better understand them when they spoke Italian. The language of the people he met was a reason why he wanted to learn Italian.
