Elter says his girlfriend's intelligence has helped her excel at work, but the intensity of the spotlight has been a challenge.
"She gets lost in her head and then she doesn't know what to say," he says.
But combining intense intelligence with very little self-confidence can be a double-edged sword.
"It's hard to know how to respond to this kid because she's so smart and so logical," Elter says. "Sometimes it seems like she hates herself.
