Nicholas personality type is INFP, with my personal preference being INFP. I think this is a pretty accurate description of him and he's been my favorite fictional character since the first time I read the book.
I'm also a sucker for a lovable character and a good story. And it's worth noting that the author has admitted that he made up all the characters in the book, including the "dwarf" Nicholas.
And, like Nicholas, he's a very complex person. He's introverted, an artist, sensitive to others' emotions, lacks direction, and strong-willed. He's also a very sensitive person (hence the nickname "Sensitive" Nick) and a very smart person. He's also good at hiding his true feelings and he's very self-conscious about his appearance (he does have a pretty ugly face).
As for Nicholas' past life, it is hinted that he was born an elf or another type of magical creature. I think this fits with his overall mysteriousness, especially in the beginning when he was still a mystery to the other kids.
