This is probably why we readers get so pissed off when we see The Hero’s Journey play out in movies and books. We know it’s just a story about a guy who gets into an epic battle and defeats the bad guy, and we know that the hero doesn’t really do anything other than be heroic. The hero accomplishes his goal whether or not he wants to do it, and his choice to do it is much more important to the story than his actual choices. This is the kind of storytelling that pisses us off. I don’t know why.
