She studied literature and English, and she said the school she attended “didn’t prepare me for anything at all. It’s because I was studying literature that I decided to become a journalist.”
Ugarte studied journalism at the University of Chile. But she says she had always wanted to work in arts and culture, so she headed to Europe to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Southern Denmark’s Institute of Journalism. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I liked the idea of working in the arts,” she says.
She moved back to Chile after she graduated, and found work at Radio Cooperativa, an alternative radio station that was based at the National University of Arts.
