Consiglieri personality type is ISTJ, as is the case with most Italian politicians. In her youth, she was a member of the "Gruppo Giovani Cristiani" ("Young Christian Group"), a Catholic student organization.
In 2006, De Girolamo entered politics as a member of the right-wing party Forza Italia, led by Silvio Berlusconi. In June 2006, she became a Spokesperson of Forza Italia in the Lazio region. In October 2007, she was elected as a national coordinator of the party. In the 2008 general election, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies with the Forza Italia list of candidates, but she did not join the group which supported the new Prime Minister, Romano Prodi.
In April 2009, De Girolamo left Forza Italia and joined the newly formed Lega Nord. On 8 August 2012 she was elected president of the Lower House of the Italian Parliament. She was re-elected in 2013 and 2015.
In 2017, she expressed interest in running for the leadership of Lega Nord in 2018, but was defeated by Matteo Salvini.
