Julie’s father was a city councilman and city council president. Her mother was a nurse and midwife (with a degree in elementary education), and both were pillars of the community.
Julie’s older brother was killed in Vietnam. Julie’s oldest sister became a lesbian and died of alcoholism. Her youngest sister became an alcoholic and died in a motorcycle accident. Julie’s mother died of cancer (and Julie did not know this until many years later). Her sister died in an automobile accident (and Julie did not know this until many years later).
Julie began working in her father’s campaign office at age 15, eventually becoming director of his campaign for State Senate. She married at age 25 and had two children.
At age 45, Julie began to feel alienated from her family, her husband, and her community. She joined Alcoholics Anonymous and began working in a soup kitchen for alcoholics. This experience led to her being called to her first 12-step meeting in New York City in 1986.
