The book is written in first person. The narrator is a young woman, Eliza Doolittle, who was born in London in 1864. Her father was a music-hall singer, her mother a dressmaker. Since she was an only child, Eliza was often left with relatives for days or weeks at a time. At age 12, she attends the Royal Academy of Music, where she’s inspired by the musicians and their music.
After graduating at age 17, Eliza finds work in the opera house, where she plays many different roles, including that of “Cecilia” in “Cecilia, or, To His Coy Mistress.” She meets Henry Higgins, a music teacher who has a particular interest in finding the beauty in individuals despite their appearances.
