He was the only child in his family, and his father was very strict in his expectations that Hoyt would be a serious, responsible person. Even when Hoyt was young, his father would tell him that he needed to be more aggressive, more outgoing, more spontaneous, more lively, and less serious. It was difficult for Hoyt to understand why he had to be so serious, but for many years, he tried to live up to his father's expectations.
As an adult, Hoyt found it difficult to be so serious all the time. He was always trying to be the responsible one, the capable one, the strong one. Every few years he would "unlearn" some of the things that his father had told him about being a professional, responsible man, but he kept trying.
