    Plot Summary

    The story is set in the late 1970s, when Poland was under communist rule. It is told from the point of view of a 15-year-old schoolgirl, who is being interviewed by a social worker. She talks about her family, her school classes, her friends, and her life at home.

    Jan Palach (11 August 1948 – 19 January 1969) was a Czech student of history and political economy at Charles University in Prague. His self-immolation was a political protest against the end of the Prague Spring resulting from the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact armies.
