He was born in 1939 in the village of Mettlach in Baden-Würtemberg, Germany, where his father worked in a factory. His family moved to the United States when he was an infant. He attended West Point, where he did not graduate; instead, he worked in the army's petroleum research department.
He moved back to Germany in 1966 to take over the family business, Nestlé. He began his career by working out of his apartment in Munich, which he called "Cave of Nestlé." He eventually moved into an office, but still preferred the freedom of home life. His wife talks of her husband's fondness for "dressing up" for dinner at their home in Switzerland while she cooks for them both.
Brabeck-Letmathe is an avid skier and climber. He is also an avid collector of old bottles, supposedly one of his favorite hobbies during his spare time.
