Jeff originally wanted Roderick to be named Rodrick. Rodrick was his middle name until his dad suggested that Rodrick wouldn’t be a great name for a character. After his father suggested Rodrick, Jeff began writing about Rodrick. Jeff liked the name Rodrick because it sounded like a real name.
Fun Fact: When Jeff first did the drafts for “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” he originally did not have Rodrick Heffley in the story line. The character of Frank Heffley was very similar to Jeff when he was younger and he had a lot in common with Frank Heffley.
