A good example of this is the time he had to act as the “big brother” of the group. He had to care for them, protect them, give them advice, and provide leadership. If you think about it, he was probably constantly thinking of ways to help the group succeed.
He was so focused on his duties as big brother that he didn’t notice that Jessie was being hooked on heroin. He had no idea that she was already addicted to the drug. Later on in the show, she finally told him about the addiction. She explained that she had to have it in order to function. It was her crutch, her way of escaping. Unfortunately for her, it also made her emotions very unstable.
He got her off heroin eventually, but it took a great deal of effort. There were many arguments with her about her addiction, but he was able to talk her down. He showed her that there were things in life she could be happy about without drugs.
