    His mother blamed him for the divorce, saying that he had become too old to be a baby sitter. He was the only member of his family who did not blame his mother for the divorce. Hess described his childhood as described as “happy.”

    He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970, and a Masters of Arts degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973.

    He took a year off from college to work as a copy boy at a Pittsburgh newspaper. After graduating from college, Hess worked as a high school English teacher at the University School of Pittsburgh from 1974 to 1976. He then taught English at Georgetown University from 1976 to 1978, and then as a professor at Haverford College from 1978 to 1981.
