    Steinitz loved telling stories, especially about his encounters with famous people. One story he told to his students was of meeting Clarence Darrow in Chicago. Steinitz was impressed by Darrow’s unorthodox approach to law, and he was impressed by Darrow’s chess skill. As Steinitz tells the story, it was Darrow who first taught him that pawns could be sacrificed. Steinitz had begun to think of his pawns as soldiers, and Darrow showed him that pawns could be used as pawns for a queen sacrifice. Steinitz loved this idea, and he loved telling his students about it.
