Jungian theory is a psychological school of thought that emphasizes the role of unconscious processes in human behavior. The collective unconscious is a collection of archetypes which are inherited from our ancestors and provides the basic structure of human thought and behavior. While our personal unconscious is subject to strong influences, our collective unconscious is generally unaffected by culture and has a more universal structure (Jackson, 1979). Archetypes represent the basic organizing principles of human experience and guide our perceptions and behavior (Jackson, 1979).
