He became interested in music at an early age, and started playing guitar at the age of 14.[1] Hosono attended Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo, Japan.[2] He became interested in electronic music after moving to Tokyo in the early 1970s.[3] Hosono performed at clubs in Tokyo with other musicians that were fans of his music.

He also inspired genres such as city pop and Shibuya-kei, and as leader of Yellow Magic Orchestra, contributed to the development and pioneering of numerous electronic genres.
