As a child, Natsuko was quiet, but outgoing and ambitious. As she grew older she became more confident and aggressive, and was regarded as a leader by her peers. She was active in sports, both in school and on the local sports team. Natsuko wanted to be a lawyer when she grew up.
In her junior year in high school, Natsuko met Masanori Hirasawa, a boy from her school's judo team. After two weeks of dating, Masanori asked her to marry him, and she accepted. They were married on December 3, 1980.
The following year, Natsuko was diagnosed with cervical cancer. After undergoing radiation therapy, she was given the all-clear.
