Much of the past research on this topic has been done by neuroscientist Paul D. MacLean. In his book The Triune Brain he proposed that the human brain is composed of three distinct yet interrelated and interacting systems: the reptilian brain, the paleomammalian brain, and the neomammalian brain. These three brains are located within a part of the brain called the cerebellum. The cerebellum is where our motor skills are coordinated, and where unconscious thought processes are coordinated and integrated with our conscious thought processes.
According to MacLean, the reptilian brain is located within the oldest part of the brain, which he referred to as the “reptilian brain core.” MacLean proposed that this was where basic sensory functions and basic emotional responses were coordinated and integrated. This brain system was designed for quick reflexes and survival. According to MacLean, the reptilian brain core was influenced by our evolutionary development as hunter-gatherers, who tended to be territorial and driven by fear.
