"I wanted to do something to help people," Duncan said. "It makes me feel good to know you have a good impact on somebody."
Duncan spent a year in the Army before he graduated from college in 1995.
"I was a career soldier," Duncan said. "I wanted to serve my country."
Duncan joined the Army ROTC program when he was in high school. He received a scholarship from the program and then went to Virginia Tech for two years. He then served in the Army for almost 16 years before his retirement in March 2013.
Duncan served under Gen. David Petraeus in Iraq and Afghanistan during his time in the Army.
