As a child, McKittrick was an anxious, hyperactive child who suffered from chronic asthma on top of his anxiety. He was afraid of the dark and the night, which was evident when he was younger. He has had panic attacks for as long as he can remember. His fear of the dark and of the unknown was so strong that he would run to his parents' bedroom at night to make sure they were still breathing.
When having panic attacks, McKittrick would sometimes go into an eye dilation state, where his pupils would dilate and his eyes would become bloodshot. This would happen when he had a panic attack and was alone in his room. He also started getting strange dreams where he felt like he was flying.
He also started feeling like he needed to talk to someone about his thoughts and feelings regarding his fear of the unknown and the dark, but no one would listen to him. McKittrick put the feelings into a box and kept them in that box, afraid that if he talked about them, they would go away and he wouldn't be able to control them.
Benjamin "Ben" McKittrick was a former Mystic Falls High School student and football player. He was turned into a vampire by Anna so he could help her open the tomb. He was set on fire by Stefan Salvatore, which killed him.
