Richard Hanover personality type is INTP, although that's a bit of a stretch since he's less introverted and more introvertish. The way I think about it is that his personality is like a hybrid of INTP and ISTP.
He has a logical mind and a pragmatic attitude to life, but he's no techie. He's more interested in the big picture than the small details. He's also not really interested in systems and structures, but rather in how they work, and how to get the most out of them. This means he does not get caught up in the details of the social web. He's more interested in how things work in the abstract, and how to get the most out of them.
This works well when he gets into a specific area in which he can identify a problem, in which he can discover a solution, in which he can then take a practical step towards a solution. But it's not so great when it comes to being part of a social system. His particular cognitive style means he doesn't have much patience for systems which are required to function. He isn't negative about this, but it does mean he can't stick with something for very long once he's found a better way.
