The Greek version of the Greek tale called Proserpina’s mother Kore, who was destroyed by Hera (Roman counterpart Juno) because Kore ate before Hera offered her sustenance. Ceres’ Roman counterpart was the Roman goddess Ops, who was also associated with grain.
The Roman myth tells us that Ceres cursed Proserpina to eat only the food which grew out of the earth; by eating this food she would fall into hell.
