After the mission, my men and I returned to our base in Afghanistan. We landed in a combat zone, where I had to stop at every checkpoint and every turn to ensure that they were secure and that we were not being ambushed. It was almost as if I had betrayed them because I was not able to take the next objective without stopping first to make sure that no one was conspiring against us. The next morning I was awakened by an officer who informed me that my men had informed him that I was incapable of leading them in battle. He said that they were embarrassed by my lack of leadership qualities.
