The MBTI was developed in the 1940s by Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Cook Briggs. It measures people on four dimensions: extraversion (E), introversion (I), agreeableness (A), and neuroticism (N). People who score high on the E dimension are outgoing and extraverted. People who score high on the I dimension are introverted and reserved. The MBTI has been criticized for not measuring the full range of human personality, since it neglects such characteristics as ambivalence, or the ability to simultaneously feel positive and negative feelings about an object. The MBTI also does not distinguish between neurotic and neurotic-sociopathic personalities, but instead attributes these psychological disorders to a general neurosis.
